Sometimes the simplest additions make the biggest impact. You might not think soy sauce on popcorn would work, but the same reason it makes a bowl of rice taste ten times better is exactly why it works so well here.

It's rich, umami-packed, and ready in minutes with your Popper. This one's perfect for movie night or whenever a late-night craving hits. Check it out:

Soy Sauce Popcorn Ingredients

  • ½ cup popcorn kernels

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 1½ tablespoons soy sauce

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder (optional)

  • Pinch of white pepper

Soy Sauce Popcorn Directions

Step 1: Heat

Set your stove to medium heat and let your Popper preheat for 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 2: Add Oil and Kernels

Pour oil into the Popsmith and toss 3 kernels. When the first kernel pops, add the rest and cover the Popper.

Step 3: Turn

Crank the Popper clockwise while the kernels pop to prevent burning. No need to do this the whole time — the Popper was built to do the heavy work for you.

Step 4: Remove

When popping slows to 1 to 2 seconds between pops, take the Popsmith off the heat and remove the lid.

Step 5: Make Soy Sauce Popcorn Coating

Melt unsalted butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and whisk in the soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder (if using), and white pepper until combined.

Step 6: Combine

Pour the popcorn into a large bowl, then slowly drizzle the soy sauce butter mixture over it. Toss gently for an even coat.

Step 7: Serve

More Soy Sauce Popcorn Tips

  • Go easy on additional salt. Soy sauce is already salty. Taste the coating before you consider adding more.

  • Level it up. Nori strips, arare (Japanese rice crackers), or wasabi peas take this from great to exceptional.

  • Add more depth. A ¼ teaspoon of nutritional yeast in the soy butter mixture adds extra savory complexity without overpowering the soy sauce.

  • Want heat? A dash of togarashi or cayenne finishes it off with a kick.

  • Eat it fresh. Like salt and vinegar popcorn, this one gets soggy fast. Make it, serve it, and try to avoid leftover popcorn as much as possible.

Umami Satisfaction in Every Bite

This soy sauce popcorn is proof that the best snacks are usually the simplest ones. You'll make this once out of curiosity, and again because it's that good. It's great for movie night, late-night cravings, or any time you want something savory in minutes.
