It’s time for another spicy popcorn recipe. This time, we’re taking inspiration from the bold and vibrant flavors of Cajun cuisine.

The heart of this Cajun popcorn recipe is the seasoning — a blend of paprika, cayenne, garlic, and herbs. It's smoky, a little spicy, and ridiculously good. The best part? It comes together fast with your Popper.

Cajun Popcorn Ingredients

  • ½ cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste; start with ⅛ tsp if you're spice-sensitive)
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper

Steps for Making Cajun Popcorn

Step 1: Make Cajun Seasoning

Combine the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, thyme, oregano, salt, and black pepper in a small bowl. Mix well and set aside.

PRO TIP: Use a spice grinder or food processor if you have one. If not, a mortar and pestle will do. You just need to give it elbow grease.

Step 2: Heat

Set your stovetop to medium heat and let the Popper preheat for 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 3: Add Oil

Add coconut oil to the Popper and allow it to heat up.

Step 4: Add Kernels

Drop 3 kernels into the pot. Add in the rest of the kernels when the first one pops, then cover the Popper.

Step 5: Turn and Pop

Turn the crank clockwise as the kernels pop. Once popping slows to 1-2 seconds between pops, take the Popper off the heat and pour the popcorn into a big bowl.

Step 6: Combine

Sprinkle the Cajun seasoning over the popcorn in stages, tossing between each addition to coat evenly.

More Cajun Popcorn Tips

  • Use fresh spices. Cajun seasoning lives and dies by the quality of its ingredients. If your paprika or cayenne have been in the pantry for a year, it's worth grabbing fresh ones.

  • Want better coating? Drizzle a tablespoon of melted butter or coconut oil over the popcorn before adding the seasoning. It helps everything stick and adds a little richness.

  • Dial up the heat. More cayenne, a pinch of red pepper flakes, or a dash of hot sauce tossed in at the end all work if you want more kick.

  • Cooking fat options. Coconut oil is our go-to for popping, but bacon grease is a great choice here if you have it. It adds a smokiness that pairs well with the Cajun spices.

  • Storage. Keep leftover popcorn in an airtight container at room temperature and finish within 3 days.

The Snack That Bites Back

This is the recipe for game night, a watch party, or any time you want a snack that actually has some personality. The Cajun seasoning blend is smoky, a little spicy, and builds with every handful in the best possible way.
