Japanese-Inspired Miso Butter Popcorn Recipe

Trust us on this — miso butter popcorn is the movie night snack upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

Here at Popsmith, we scarf down ramen, sushi, and takoyaki like it’s no one’s business.

Can you blame us? Japanese food is pure magic, and its distinct flavors translate perfectly to popcorn. Case in point: our soy sauce popcorn and matcha popcorn recipes.

But we couldn’t stop there.

This time, we tried combining our Oh Sooo Buttery Popcorn with miso paste, furikake seasoning, and toasted sesame flakes. The result? This insanely delicious miso butter popcorn.

Now grab your Popper and let’s get to it:

Miso Popcorn Ingredients

  • 1 packet Popsmith Oh Sooo Buttery Popcorn

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 tablespoons white miso paste

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

  • 2 tablespoons furikake seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame flakes

Miso Butter Popcorn Directions

Step 1: Preheat

Set your stove to medium heat and let the Popsmith preheat for 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 2: Pour Oil and Kernels

Cut the oil portion of your Oh Sooo Buttery Popcorn packet and squeeze it into the pot. Then cut open the kernels section of your popcorn kit and drop 3 kernels into the Popper. When the first kernel pops, toss in the rest.

Step 3: Add Buttery Salt

Now cut open the seasoning packet, pour the salt into the Popsmith, and cover the pot.

PRO TIP: Add a bit of salt first and save the rest. You can always add more salt later, but there’s not much you can do if your popcorn ends up too salty after adding the rest of the ingredients.

Step 4: Turn

Turn the Popper’s crank clockwise while the kernels pop to prevent them from burning.

Step 5: Remove

When popping slows to 1-2 seconds between pops, take the Popsmith off the heat and pour your popcorn into a huge bowl.

Step 6: Create the Miso Butter

Mash the butter, miso paste, sesame oil, honey, and garlic powder together in a small bowl until smooth and well combined.

Step 7: Warm the Mixture

Microwave the miso butter mixture for 20-30 seconds until just melted but not bubbling. Then stir well.

Step 8: Combine and Toss

Drizzle the miso butter over the popcorn, then use a large spoon to toss the popcorn and give it an even coating.

Step 9: Add Finishing Touches

Sprinkle furikake seasoning and toasted sesame seeds over the popcorn and give it one final toss.

Step 10: Serve

More Miso Butter Popcorn Tips

  • Can't find miso paste? Check the refrigerated section of your grocery store near the tofu, or visit any Asian market. It keeps for months in the fridge.

  • Make this popcorn yours — sprinkle chili flakes for heat or add chopped green onions for garnish.

  • There are different versions of furikake available. You’ll see sesame, bonito flake, and nori varieties. Any of these work for this popcorn recipe.

  • Miso popcorn tastes best fresh, but in the unlikely event you have leftover popcorn, stash it in an airtight container and eat it within 2 days for the best texture.

  • Double the miso butter recipe and keep extra in the fridge! It’s excellent on grilled corn, roasted veggies, or spread on bread.
