French onion soup is like a hug in a bowl. Popcorn is the same kind of comfort, just crunchier. Together they make a snack that's perfect for slow Saturdays, rainy afternoons, or any night when you want something cozy without any real effort.

Now grab your Popper and let’s pop some French onion popcorn:

French Onion Popcorn Ingredients

  • ½ cup popcorn kernels

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • 2 teaspoons onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed

  • ¼ cup nutritional yeast

  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped (for garnish)

French Onion Popcorn Directions

Step 1: Preheat

turning on stove

Set your stove to medium heat and allow your Popsmith to preheat for 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 2: Add Oil and Kernels

Pour oil into the pot and drop 3 kernels. When the first kernel pops, toss in the rest and cover the Popper.

Step 3: Crank and Pop

Turn the Popper’s crank clockwise while the kernels pop to prevent burning. You don’t need to do this the whole time — it’s built to do most of the work for you.

Step 4: Remove

When popping slows to 1 to 2 seconds between pops, take the Popper off the heat and pour the popcorn into a huge bowl.

Step 5: Make the Spice Mix

Whisk together melted butter, onion powder, garlic powder, thyme, black pepper, salt, and crushed rosemary in a small bowl until well combined.

Step 6: Combine

Pour the butter and seasoning mixture over the popcorn and toss well. Sprinkle the nutritional yeast over the top and toss again until evenly coated.

Step 7: Serve

Top with the fresh chopped chives and enjoy your French onion popcorn.

More French Onion Popcorn Tips

  • Add more depth. A pinch of beef bouillon powder mixed into the seasoning blend takes the richness up a notch.

  • Shortcut option. Swap all the individual spices for 2 to 3 tablespoons of store-bought French onion dip seasoning mix. Drizzle the butter, sprinkle the mix, and toss.

  • Add heat. A pinch of chili flakes in the seasoning adds a subtle kick that works well with the onion and herb base.

  • No fresh chives? Dried chives work as a substitute. Just use about 1 teaspoon in place of 2 tablespoons fresh.

  • Storage. Keep leftover popcorn in an airtight container at room temperature and finish it within 3 days. It's best on day one, though.

Instant Comfort

Movie night, a slow Sunday, a rainy afternoon that needs something warm and savory — French onion popcorn is your answer. Since it uses basic ingredients you already have in your kitchen, you can make it anytime the cravings hit.
